Overview
Thunbergia is one of the herbs traditionally used in Ayurveda for parasites and worms. Thunbergia alata is described as a variety of Kakanasa. It is a climbing ornamental vine. The plant is used medicinally for worm infestations and swellings. The text mentions it as having attractive flowers. Verse ref: page 441.
How Thunbergia Helps with Parasites and Worms
According to Ayurvedic pharmacology, Thunbergia has specific properties that make it valuable for addressing parasites and worms:
- Potency (Virya): Sheeta (cold)
- Post-digestive (Vipaka): Katu (pungent)
- Taste (Rasa): Tikta (bitter)
- Qualities (Guna): Laghu (light)
Safety & Precautions
Our classical sources list no contraindications, drug interactions or overdose signs for Thunbergia, and no safe dose either. With so little on record, the safest approach is to use it only under a qualified practitioner.
Suspected worms are best confirmed by a doctor, since the right treatment depends on the type of parasite.
In Ayurvedic terms Thunbergia is bitter, light and cooling, qualities that can increase Vata, the dosha of dryness and movement, if a remedy is taken for too long. That is one more reason to keep its use short and supervised.
