Overview

Ridge Gourd is one of the herbs traditionally used in Ayurveda for allergic rhinitis. Devadali (Luffa echinata) is a climbing plant found in dry scrub forests. Its fruits are small and covered with soft spines. The fruit is extremely bitter and is used as a purgative and in malarial fever. It is also effective against worms and used in skin diseases. The fruit is used for jaundice and liver disorders. The decoction of fruit is used as nasal drops (Nasya) for headache. Verse: 299-301.

How Ridge Gourd Helps with Allergic Rhinitis

According to Ayurvedic pharmacology, Ridge Gourd has specific properties that make it valuable for addressing allergic rhinitis:

  • Potency (Virya): Ushna (hot)
  • Post-digestive (Vipaka): Katu (pungent)
  • Taste (Rasa): Tikta (bitter)
  • Qualities (Guna): Laghu (light), Ruksha (dry), Tikshna (sharp)

Safety & Precautions

Ridge Gourd needs a clear split here. The cultivated Torai vegetable is a mild, everyday food that the texts describe as light, cooling and a gentle laxative. The bitter wild fruit, Devadali, is a different story.

Devadali is a strong medicine

The Bhavaprakash Nighantu describes Devadali's fruit as extremely bitter and uses it as a purgative (Virechana). Its qualities are light, dry and sharp, with a heating potency. A remedy designed to purge the bowels is not something to take casually or to experiment with at home.

  • Do not self-prescribe Devadali for purging, worms, fever, liver problems or headache.
  • Do not prepare your own nasal drops from the fruit. Nasal therapy (Nasya) is a practitioner-guided treatment.
  • Its heating, drying, sharp nature suggests caution for anyone who already runs hot, dry or depleted.

What the sources do not tell us

The classical passages in our records give no specific contraindications, drug interactions, overdose signs or guidance for pregnancy and nursing. That silence is not evidence of safety. If you are considering Devadali for any reason, consult a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner and tell your doctor about any medications you take.

Jaundice, liver disease, malarial fever and worm infections all need proper medical diagnosis. Herbal support should never replace it.
