Overview

Sesbania is one of the herbs traditionally used in Ayurveda for allergic rhinitis. Agastya (Sesbania grandiflora) is a fast-growing tree found in tropical and subtropical regions. It grows 14-20 feet tall. The flowers, leaves, and bark are all used medicinally. White and red flowered varieties exist. Flowers are eaten as a vegetable. The bark is used as a bitter tonic. The juice of leaves and flowers is used in nasal polyps and sinusitis. Leaves have 12-15 pairs of leaflets. Flowers are 22-24 inches long in drooping racemes. It is used in respiratory and blood disorders. Dose: Churna (a.r. 24). Verse: noted alongside other tree medicines.

How Sesbania Helps with Allergic Rhinitis

According to Ayurvedic pharmacology, Sesbania has specific properties that make it valuable for addressing allergic rhinitis:

  • Potency (Virya): Sheeta (cold)
  • Post-digestive (Vipaka): Katu (pungent)
  • Taste (Rasa): Tikta (bitter), Kashaya (astringent)
  • Qualities (Guna): Laghu (light), Ruksha (dry)

Safety & Precautions

Sesbania flowers are eaten as a vegetable, which suggests the flowers are familiar as food. Beyond that, our sources do not list specific contraindications, drug interactions or overdose signs for this herb.

What the Properties Suggest

Sesbania is cooling, light and dry. In Ayurvedic reasoning, dry and light qualities can aggravate Vata, the dosha of air and movement, so people who are already very dry or depleted may want to discuss it with a practitioner first. This is general Ayurvedic logic, not a documented warning specific to Sesbania.

Medicinal Use

The leaf juice, bark and powder are medicinal preparations rather than foods. Because our sources do not give clear doses or safety data for them, use these forms only under the guidance of a qualified practitioner.

If you are pregnant, nursing, taking prescription medicine, or have a bleeding disorder, speak with your doctor before using Sesbania medicinally.
