Overview
Patalgarudi is one of the herbs traditionally used in Ayurveda for urinary disorders. Patalagarudi is described as an herb used primarily as an antidote to poisons, especially snake venom. The name suggests its root goes deep into the ground (Patala = underground). It is used in various anti-venom formulations. Verse ref: page 448.
How Patalgarudi Helps with Urinary Disorders
According to Ayurvedic pharmacology, Patalgarudi has specific properties that make it valuable for addressing urinary disorders:
- Potency (Virya): Ushna (hot)
- Post-digestive (Vipaka): Katu (pungent)
- Taste (Rasa): Tikta (bitter)
- Qualities (Guna): Laghu (light)
Safety & Precautions
The classical source does not list contraindications, side effects, overdose signs, or drug interactions for Patalgarudi. That absence is not evidence of safety. It simply means the record is silent, and you should treat this as a herb for practitioner use only.
Snakebite and poisoning
Although the Bhavaprakasha Nighantu describes Patalgarudi as an antidote to snake venom, never use it, or any herb, in place of emergency care. If you or someone near you is bitten by a snake or may have been poisoned, call emergency services and get to a hospital immediately.
Identity and sourcing
The botanical identity is not clearly specified, and a neighboring entry with a similar name, Patalgaruda Gaudi, is a different plant (Cocculus hirsutus). Mix-ups between similarly named plants are a real risk, so avoid buying loose material labeled with this name from unverified sellers.
Heating potency
Patalgarudi has a heating potency (Ushna Virya). The source does not say who should avoid it, so ask a qualified practitioner before use, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, giving it to a child, or taking prescription medicines.
