Onion for Hemorrhoids & Piles: Does It Work?

Does Onion help with hemorrhoids? In classical Ayurveda, yes, and this is one of onion's best-documented medicinal uses. The hemorrhoids chapter of the Charaka Samhita gives cooked onion as a food-medicine for bleeding piles and for piles with aggravated Vata.

Onion taken alone or along with meat soup, khada (pungent drink), yusha (vegetable soup) and yavagu (thick gruel) cures excessive bleeding and aggravated vata.

Charaka Samhita, Chikitsa Sthana, Chapter 14 (Arsha Chikitsa)

The same chapter recommends onion cooked with buttermilk, or a lentil soup soured with buttermilk, for bleeding hemorrhoids. Kitchen-pharmacy tradition adds a simple home version: onion juice mixed with rock candy and ghee, taken twice a day.

Why onion? Ayurveda calls hemorrhoids (Arsha) and traces the most common type to a disturbed Vata, the dry, moving principle that governs elimination. Onion is heavy, oily and strengthening, with a sweet post-digestive effect (Madhura Vipaka), and the Bhavaprakash Nighantu (Varga 9) says it pacifies Vata. Cooked onion is the form the classical recipes use.

It is a dietary support, not a cure on its own. Onion is heating and increases Pitta, so it needs care when piles are hot, burning and inflamed.

How Onion Helps with Hemorrhoids & Piles

Ayurveda describes several kinds of hemorrhoids. Vata-type piles (Vataja Arsha) are dry, hard and come with constipation and straining. Pitta-type piles (Pittaja Arsha) are red, burning and bleed. Onion's profile fits the first picture best.

Oily, heavy and Vata-calming

Onion is classified as heavy (Guru) and unctuous (Snigdha), with a sweet post-digestive effect. These are the opposite of Vata's dry, light, rough qualities. The Bhavaprakash Nighantu lists onion as Vata-pacifying (Vatahara) and strengthening (Balya), which matches the Charaka Samhita verse on onion for "aggravated vata" in hemorrhoids.

Kindling digestion

Onion is also an appetizer (Deepana), a substance that kindles the digestive fire (Agni). Ayurveda treats weak digestion and constipation as the root of most piles, and pairs onion with buttermilk (Takra), which the Ashtanga Hridaya names as useful in hemorrhoids and as balancing Vata and Kapha.

The vehicle shapes the effect

In the classical recipes onion is never eaten raw on its own for piles. It is cooked with buttermilk, soured soups or gruel, and the home remedy adds ghee and rock candy. Ghee is consistently prescribed for hemorrhoids in classical texts because it lubricates the bowel and softens stool.

Where onion does not fit

Onion has a heating potency (Ushna Virya), and the Ashtanga Hridaya notes that it increases Pitta. Raw onion also aggravates Vata. For hot, inflamed piles, the cooling side of the plan matters more. Our sources contain no clinical research on onion for hemorrhoids.

How to Use Onion for Hemorrhoids & Piles

For hemorrhoids, onion is used in two ways: cooked as food, following the Charaka Samhita, and as a small dose of fresh juice with rock candy and ghee, following kitchen-pharmacy tradition.

FormAmountBest ForWhen
Onion juice with rock candy and ghee1 tbsp juice, 1 tsp rock candy or organic sugar, 1/2 tsp gheeHemorrhoids generallyTwice a day
Onion cooked with buttermilkFood amountsBleeding hemorrhoidsWith meals
Onion with vegetable soup or thick gruelFood amountsBleeding with aggravated VataWith meals

Making the juice remedy

Grate or blend a fresh onion and strain out the juice. Stir 1 tablespoon of juice with 1 teaspoon of rock candy and half a teaspoon of ghee. The ghee and sugar are the vehicle (Anupana), the substance a remedy is taken with to steer its effect; here they soften onion's sharpness.

Cooking for piles

The Charaka Samhita cooks onion with buttermilk, or adds it to vegetable soup (Yusha) or thick rice gruel (Yavagu). Thin, room-temperature buttermilk with roasted cumin and grated ginger is the classical post-meal digestive for hemorrhoids, and onion fits easily into that diet.

How long

Our sources give no fixed course length. Treat onion as part of a daily diet that relieves constipation, alongside a bowel base such as Triphala, warm water on waking and ghee with meals.

If your piles are burning and bleeding heavily, keep onion modest and cooked. Any new or unexplained rectal bleeding needs a doctor's check first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is raw or cooked onion better for hemorrhoids?

Cooked. Every Charaka Samhita recipe for piles cooks onion with buttermilk, soups or gruel. Raw onion aggravates Vata and Pitta, while cooked onion calms Vata. The only raw form in tradition is the juice remedy, and it is tempered with ghee and rock candy.

Can onion help bleeding piles?

The Charaka Samhita does give cooked onion with buttermilk for bleeding hemorrhoids, and says onion with soups or gruel cures excessive bleeding with aggravated Vata. Because onion is heating and increases Pitta, keep it cooked and moderate when bleeding comes with burning, and see a doctor about any unexplained bleeding.

How long does onion take to work for hemorrhoids?

Our sources give no timeline. Onion works as part of a diet that ends constipation and straining, so expect it to act gradually alongside fiber, warm water and ghee rather than as a quick fix.

Onion vs Haritaki for hemorrhoids?

Haritaki is described as the primary single herb for piles, acting as a laxative and astringent, especially for the constipated Vata type. Onion is a food-level support. For heavy bleeding, Nagakesara is the classical first choice, and Aloe Vera is the cooling option for hot, inflamed piles.

Safety & Precautions

As a common food, onion is familiar and widely eaten. The cautions Ayurveda raises are about heat and about which form you use.

Pitta and heat

Onion has a heating potency, and both raw and cooked onion can aggravate Pitta, the dosha of heat and metabolism, when taken in quantity. The Ashtanga Hridaya also notes that onion increases Pitta. If you run hot or are prone to acidity, flushing or inflammation, keep amounts modest and favor cooked onion.

Raw onion and Vata

Raw onion aggravates Vata, the dosha of movement and dryness, even though cooked onion calms it. If you tend toward Vata imbalance, use onion cooked rather than raw.

First-aid uses need medical backup

Onion's traditional roles in fainting, convulsions and fever are first-aid measures for the moment, not treatments for the cause. Any fainting episode with chest pain or palpitations, any seizure, and any fainting that does not resolve within a minute or two needs prompt medical care.

The texts in our records do not address specific drug interactions, pregnancy or overdose. If you are pregnant, nursing, on medication, or planning to take onion juice daily as a remedy, check with a qualified practitioner first.
