Parkinson's Disease and Vata in Majja Dhatu
Parkinson's disease is described as a manifestation of vata disturbing majja dhatu's function of maintaining coordination of muscle groups, equilibrium, and center of gravity. The lack of coordination is a vata symptom. In a Parkinson's patient, the knees, ankles, hips, and elbows are flexed and the person walks like a statue. It becomes difficult for the patient to stop movement unless physically blocked by a chair or table. Exaggerated reflexes also accompany this loss of coordination.
