Increased Mamsa (Mamsa Vruddhi)

In mamsa vruddhi, mamsa dhatu increases in volume but decreases in quality. Physical signs include enlarged, bulky or stiff muscles, undue enlargement of the lips, a large expanded nose, pendular breasts, and a potbelly abdomen. The hips and buttocks become enlarged and the body loses its proportion. The tongue becomes heavy and enlarged.

Mamsa vruddhi may lead to the formation of muscle tumors called myomas, repeated attacks of tonsillitis, and muscle hypertrophy. The condition of myasthenia (muscular weakness) associated with increased mamsa leads to swelling, water retention, and herniation such as hiatal hernia. When muscle loses its tone, fluid retention creates swelling in the resulting space, and displacement or slipped disc may develop as mamsa can no longer hold joints and ligaments in position.

Mamsa dhatu is closely connected to the tonsils (gilayu), which regulate mamsa immunity. If tonsils are removed, the thymus takes over this function. Tonsils strengthen the immunity of smooth muscles such as the stomach and pancreas, and chronic tonsillitis may cause myocarditis and muscular rheumatism as complications.
