Silver for Heartburn & Acid Reflux: Does It Work?
Does Silver (Rajata) help with heartburn and acid reflux? Ayurvedic sources do list heartburn among silver's uses, alongside inflammatory conditions of the intestines and an overactive gallbladder. But this is a practitioner's medicine, not a home remedy.
The medicinal form is Rajata Bhasma, silver that has been purified (Shodhana) and then incinerated (Marana) into a fine ash (Bhasma). The Bhavaprakash Nighantu (Varga 7) describes this silver ash as cooling and sweet, and used in diseases of Pitta origin.
That is the link to heartburn. Ayurveda calls heartburn Amlapitta, literally "sour Pitta," and the Madhava Nidana (Chapter 51) explains it as aggravated Pitta, the dosha of heat and digestion, building up in the stomach and pushing upward. A cooling, Pitta-calming mineral fits that picture.
If you are considering silver for heartburn, the honest starting point is a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner, not a purchase of silver ash.
How Silver Helps with Heartburn & Acid Reflux
Heartburn in Ayurveda is a problem of excess heat. Pachaka Pitta, the acidic digestive fire of the stomach, grows beyond its proper amount, and its hot, sharp and liquid qualities burn the stomach lining and rise upward.
Cooling without drying
Silver is described as sweet, sour and astringent in taste, unctuous and light in quality, cold in potency (Sheeta Virya) and sweet after digestion (Madhura Vipaka). Its cold potency directly counters the heat of aggravated Pitta, and its unctuous, sweet nature cools without drying the tissues out.
Ayurvedic sources describe silver as beneficial for excess Pitta and as calming Vata too. That suits heartburn that runs hot, and the nervous, irregular kind where Vata and Pitta are both involved.
Where it does not fit
Silver should be used with caution in Kapha people, since it can aggravate Kapha, the heavy, damp dosha. Heartburn that comes with heaviness, fullness and a coated tongue, the pattern Ayurveda calls Ama-Pitta, is a poor match.
Our sources hold no clinical research on silver for heartburn. Its place here rests on classical and traditional description only.
How to Use Silver for Heartburn & Acid Reflux
For heartburn there is no home preparation of silver ash. Rajata Bhasma is taken internally only on the prescription of a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner, who sets the dose, vehicle and course.
| Form | Dose | Who decides |
|---|---|---|
| Rajata Bhasma (silver ash) | Set by the prescribing practitioner; no self-dose | A qualified Ayurvedic practitioner, using pharmacy-grade material |
| Milk heated in a silver container | A cup of warm milk | A traditional household practice for strength and stamina, not a heartburn treatment |
Why quality matters
The Sharangadhara Samhita (Madhyama Khanda, Chapter 11) sets out the purification and incineration of metals. The Bhavaprakash Nighantu adds that good silver is white, lustrous, soft and malleable, while reddish or brittle silver is considered impure. Do not make silver ash yourself, and do not buy unverified products to self-treat.
Vehicle and course
The anupana, the medium a medicine is taken with, and the length of the course are chosen by the practitioner for your presentation. Our sources give no heartburn-specific course for silver.
What you can do meanwhile
Silver is never the whole plan. The foundation for heartburn is a Pitta-calming diet: no hot spices, pickles, fermented food, alcohol or coffee, a modest evening meal finished early, and no lying down right after eating.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I take silver ash on my own for heartburn?
No. Rajata Bhasma is a metal preparation that depends on correct purification, incineration and dosing, and our sources give no self-use dose. Take it only on a qualified practitioner's prescription, from a reputable pharmacy.
Can I take silver with antacids or acid-reducing medication?
Our sources do not describe drug interactions for silver. With a metal, that silence calls for more caution, not less, so involve your doctor as well as your practitioner.
Is colloidal silver the same thing?
No. Our sources say nothing about colloidal silver. Do not treat it as the same thing as Rajata Bhasma, or treat anything on this page as support for it.
Silver vs Shatavari or Licorice for heartburn?
Shatavari and Licorice are plants described as protecting and healing the stomach lining, and they can be used at home within standard doses. Silver is a practitioner-only metal for the hot Pitta pattern. For most people, the plants are the simpler place to start.

If you are interested in Silver for heartburn, the starting point is a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner, not a purchase of silver ash.
Best form: Rajata Bhasma, by prescription only. It is a purified, incinerated metal that needs expert preparation and dosing, and a practitioner can judge whether your heartburn runs hot enough, in the Pitta sense, for a cooling mineral to make sense.
Household side: warm milk heated in a pure silver container is a traditional practice for strength and stamina. That is not a heartburn treatment. For a cooling herb you can use at home, Shatavari in milk is the simpler choice.

Never self-dose any metal preparation, use caution with silver if you have a Kapha constitution, and get urgent care for heartburn with chest pain or shortness of breath.
Safety & Precautions
Silver is a metal, and that changes the safety conversation. Plant herbs can often be tried gently at home. Metal preparations cannot.
Practitioner Supervision Is Essential
Rajata Bhasma depends entirely on correct purification, incineration and dosing. Our sources give no self-use dose, and quality depends on the raw silver being pure: reddish or brittle silver is considered impure. Take silver ash only on the prescription of a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner, sourced from a reputable pharmacy. Do not make it, and do not self-dose it.
Who Should Be Cautious
Silver should be used with caution in Kapha people, since it can aggravate Kapha, the heavy, damp dosha. It is a poor fit if your symptoms are heavy, congested, sluggish or cold.
What the Sources Do Not Cover
Our sources do not describe drug interactions, overdose signs, or use in pregnancy and nursing. With a metal, that silence calls for more caution, not less. If you take any prescription medication, involve your doctor as well as your practitioner.
Colloidal Silver
Our sources say nothing about colloidal silver. Do not treat it as the same thing as Rajata Bhasma, or treat anything on this page as support for it.
