Orpiment for Hiccups: Does It Work?
Does Orpiment (Haritala) help with hiccups? Not in any way you can use. Orpiment is not a herb; it is yellow arsenic, arsenic trisulphide, and it is for qualified practitioners only. Never self-prescribe it, swallow it or make anything with it at home.
The classical link to hiccups is real but thin. In the Charaka Samhita's chapter on hiccups and breathing difficulty (Hikka Shvasa Chikitsa, Chikitsa Sthana 17), orpiment appears as one ingredient in a medicated ghee prepared the classical way. Our source records only a fragment of that recipe, so we cannot tell you its full makeup or which of the two conditions it was mainly meant for.
The same tradition was blunt about the danger. The Sushruta Samhita (Kalpa Sthana 2) names orpiment as one of the two mineral poisons, and the Bhavaprakash Nighantu insists it must be carefully purified (Shodhana) before any use. This page explains the tradition so you understand it. For hiccups, plant remedies and breathing methods are the right place to start.
How Orpiment Helps with Hiccups
Ayurveda links hiccups (Hikka) to all three doshas, the body's functional energies: Vata (movement), Pitta (heat) and Kapha (structure). Classical therapy for hiccups with breathing difficulty aims to loosen thick phlegm blocking the breathing channels so the breath can settle.
What the classical record says
The Bhavaprakash Nighantu (Varga 7) describes orpiment as pungent and bitter in taste (Katu, Tikta), light and unctuous (Laghu, Snigdha), hot in potency (Ushna Virya) and pungent in its post-digestive effect (Katu Vipaka). Its listed actions are against skin disease, worms and poison, and as a rejuvenative (Rasayana).
Pungent, bitter and hot are qualities Ayurveda generally uses against heavy, moist Kapha, the pattern behind phlegm-driven hiccups. But none of orpiment's recorded actions is specific to hiccups, and our sources do not explain what role it plays in the Charaka hiccup ghee, so we will not guess. Every classical use depends on purified material inside practitioner-made mineral preparations (Rasa formulations).
The modern safety picture
Orpiment's chemical constituent is arsenic trisulphide. The Sushruta Samhita itself classes it with white arsenic as a mineral poison, which is why the classical theory never translates into home use.
How to Use Orpiment for Hiccups
Do not use orpiment in any form on your own for hiccups or anything else. It is an arsenic mineral. This section explains how the classical texts handle it and gives no home doses on purpose.
The only medicinal context: purified orpiment in practitioner formulas
The Bhavaprakash Nighantu describes two types, a foliated form (Patra Haritala) considered superior and a massive form (Pindi Haritala), and states that orpiment must be carefully purified before use. In the hiccup chapter of the Charaka Samhita it is one ingredient among many in a medicated ghee, never a standalone remedy.
| Form | Dose | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Raw orpiment, home-processed or unverified material | Never | A classical mineral poison |
| Purified orpiment in a Rasa formulation | Set by a qualified Vaidya only | Verified pharmacy, defined course, medical monitoring |
The safer path for hiccups
Ayurvedic first aid starts with the breath: a deep breath held low behind the belly button, then a slow exhale. A mix of honey and castor oil, licked from a fingertip every 2 or 3 minutes, is the classic kitchen remedy. For hiccups with phlegm and a heavy chest, warming Long Pepper is on the classical key-herb list.
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, children and anyone with a chronic illness must never take orpiment preparations. Hiccups that last more than about two days need a doctor.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I take orpiment for hiccups at home?
No. Orpiment is arsenic trisulphide, and the Sushruta Samhita names it one of the two mineral poisons. It is a practitioner-only ingredient with no home dose.
Why is orpiment linked to hiccups at all?
The Charaka Samhita's chapter on hiccups and breathing difficulty lists purified orpiment as one ingredient in a medicated ghee. That is the extent of the link in our sources. This page records the tradition for completeness; it is not a recommendation.
What should I use instead for hiccups?
Start with the breath, then plant remedies. Long Pepper suits hiccups with phlegm and a heavy chest, Ajwain suits hiccups driven by gas and bloating, and castor oil with honey is the classic first-aid mix.
When are hiccups a reason to see a doctor?
If they last more than about two days, or come with heart, kidney, liver or neurological illness, or follow possible poisoning or heavy vomiting. These point to something more serious than a passing spasm.
Recommended: Start Orpiment for Hiccups
If you want to settle hiccups today, Orpiment is not the place to begin. It is a practitioner-only arsenic mineral, and the classical texts themselves call it a poison.
Best starting point: your breath. Take a deep breath, hold it low behind the belly button, then exhale slowly. If that fails, breathe in and out of an open paper bag for 1 to 2 minutes.
Kitchen version: mix 1 teaspoon of honey with 1 teaspoon of castor oil, and lick a fingertip of it every 2 or 3 minutes until the hiccups settle.
Match it to your pattern: if phlegm and a heavy chest come first (Kapha), warming Long Pepper. If gas and bloating come first (Vata), a pinch of Ajwain after meals.

Never give any orpiment preparation to children or use one in pregnancy or breastfeeding, and see a doctor if hiccups last more than about two days.
Safety & Precautions
Orpiment is an arsenic compound. Unlike most substances on this site, it is not a gentle herb with a few exceptions. It is a recognised poison in the classical texts themselves.
The milky exudations of Kumudaghni, Snuhi and Jala-Kshiri are poisons and are known as the three Kshira-Vishas, Phenasma-bhasma (white arsenic) and Haritala (yellow orpiment) are the two mineral poisons.

What this means for you
- Never self-medicate. Do not buy, take or apply raw orpiment.
- Purification is required. The Bhavaprakash Nighantu says it must be carefully purified (Shodhana) before any use, and that work belongs to a trained practitioner.
- External use is not a safe shortcut. Classical skin and hair-removal pastes were still practitioner preparations.
- Get medical care. If you think you or someone else has swallowed or been exposed to orpiment, contact emergency services or a poison control centre.
Our sources do not list specific drug interactions or overdose signs, so this page does not guess at them. Any product containing orpiment should only be used under the supervision of a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner working with a medical doctor.
