Vasaka for Anemia: Does It Work?
Does Vasaka (Malabar Nut, Adhatoda vasica) help with anemia? Only in a minor, indirect way. Vasaka is Ayurveda's leading herb for cough and asthma, and its second great use is in bleeding disorders (Raktapitta). It is not a blood builder.
Its classical link to anemia is a compound formula. The Sushruta Samhita (Sutra Sthana, Chapter 44) describes purgative pills made from Trivrit with Danti, Dravanti, black pepper and Vasaka, mixed with sugar and a little rock salt and followed with cold water. The text says these pills cure bladder pain, thirst, fever, vomiting, consumption, anemia and dizziness.
So Vasaka belongs in anemia care as one ingredient in a classical cleansing formula, and possibly where bleeding is part of the picture. If you want a herb to rebuild blood, look elsewhere first.
How Vasaka Helps with Anemia
The Bhavaprakash Nighantu lists Vasaka's actions as relieving cough (Kasahara) and breathlessness (Shwasahara), calming bleeding disorders (Raktapitta Shamaka), reducing fever (Jvarghna), clearing Kapha, supporting the heart (Hridya) and clearing worms (Krimighna).
Two of these touch anemia. Bleeding disorders drain blood, and Raktapitta is the Ayurvedic name for bleeding driven by heated, aggravated blood. Calming that bleeding protects the blood the body is trying to build. Worms are a second classical drain, and Vasaka is listed as anthelmintic.
Its properties are bitter and astringent, light (Laghu) and dry (Ruksha), cold in potency (Sheeta Virya), with a pungent post-digestive effect (Katu Vipaka). It reduces Pitta and Kapha but can aggravate Vata. That makes it a poor fit for the dry, depleted Vata type of anemia. Our sources contain no research on Vasaka for anemia itself.
How to Use Vasaka for Anemia
For anemia, Vasaka is used only in a narrow way: as part of a classical compound, or when a bleeding disorder sits behind the anemia. It is not a daily anemia tonic.
| Form | Typical amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh leaf juice (Vasa Svarasa) | 10 to 20 ml with 1 tsp honey | The classical form for bleeding disorders; twice daily |
| Leaf powder (churna) | 1 to 3 g | Twice daily with honey, after meals |
| Trivrit compound pills | As prescribed | The Sushruta Samhita purgative formula that names anemia |
The vehicle
Honey is the classical vehicle (anupana). The Sharangadhara Samhita says the expressed juice of Vasaka taken with honey alleviates bleeding disorders. If you are dry or depleted, warm milk softens Vasaka's drying quality.
Course length
Use it in a defined course under guidance, and pause if Vata signs appear: dry mouth, constipation or a dry cough. Pair any anemia protocol with an iron source and Amla for absorption.
Who should avoid it
- Pregnant women. Vasicine, its main alkaloid, stimulates the uterus.
- People with the dry, constipated Vata type of anemia.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Vasaka increase hemoglobin?
Our sources make no such claim. Vasaka is a cough, asthma and bleeding-disorder herb. Its anemia link is as one ingredient in a classical purgative formula from the Sushruta Samhita.
Can Vasaka help anemia from bleeding?
It is a classical remedy for bleeding disorders, so it may help the bleeding side. Any ongoing bleeding needs a medical diagnosis first, and the lost iron still needs replacing.
Is Vasaka safe in pregnancy-related anemia?
No. Vasaka is contraindicated in pregnancy because of the uterine-stimulant action of vasicine. Anemia in pregnancy needs monitoring by an obstetrician.
Recommended: Start Vasaka for Anemia
If you want to use Vasaka as part of anemia care, start only if bleeding is part of your picture, and treat it as a supporting herb.
Best form: Vasaka leaf powder or fresh leaf juice taken with honey, the classical pairing for bleeding disorders.
Kitchen version: 1 to 3 g of Vasaka leaf powder stirred into a teaspoon of honey, twice daily after meals. It is very bitter, which is why honey is the traditional vehicle.
Dosha fork: if your anemia comes with heat, burning or bleeding (Pitta type), Vasaka's cooling nature fits. If it comes with dryness and constipation (Vata type), skip it or take it in warm milk under guidance.

Do not use Vasaka in pregnancy, and see a doctor about any unexplained bleeding.
Safety & Precautions
Vasaka has a long record of use, but two cautions matter.
Pregnancy
Do not use Vasaka in pregnancy. Vasicine, its main alkaloid, stimulates the uterus.
Dry, Vata-type constitutions
Vasaka reduces Pitta and Kapha but can aggravate Vata, the dosha of dryness and movement. Its light, dry quality can leave you with a dry mouth, constipation or a dry cough. If these appear, pause or take it with warm milk under guidance.
Medicines and serious symptoms
No classical contraindication with prescription drugs is documented in our sources, but tell your doctor if you take Vasaka alongside medication. Never stop prescribed inhalers in favour of it.
Coughing up frank blood, severe breathlessness at rest, or fever lasting more than a few days needs medical evaluation first. Vasaka is a supporting herb, not a replacement for care.
