Its very name in Sanskrit means strength, and classical texts class it among the elite Balya (strengthening) and Vatahara (Vata-pacifying) drugs that rebuild the lumbar muscles, bones, and nerves that aggravated Vata erodes.

Most chronic backache in the Ayurvedic model is a Vata disorder of the lower back, the seat of Apana Vata. The drying quality of aggravated Vata depletes the synovial fluid between vertebrae, tightens the paravertebral muscles, and slowly wastes the underlying Asthi (bone) and Majja (marrow and nerve) tissue. The classical Bala Taila massage protocol

Warm three to four tablespoons of Bala Taila in a hot-water bath until comfortably warm to the touch. Bala root contains ephedrine. Is it safe to take internally for back pain?

External Bala Taila has minimal systemic absorption and is safe for almost everyone, including people with cardiovascular risk factors. Internal Bala (powder, decoction, capsule) is a different question. Bala root contains roughly 0.085% ephedrine and related alkaloids, which means internal use is contraindicated in hypertension, heart arrhythmia, hyperthyroidism, glaucoma, and pregnancy. Athletes in tested sport should avoid it entirely, ephedrine is on the WADA prohibited list. In 2004 the US FDA banned ephedra (Ephedra sinica) as a dietary ingredient after deaths linked to high-dose weight-loss supplements. Bala is a different plant, but it contains the same alkaloid family at much lower concentrations. Pregnancy and Concentrated Extracts

Modern Bala extracts should be avoided during pregnancy; use traditional preparations only and under qualified supervision.

Signs of Over-Dose

Strength (bala), complexion (varna), and vital essence (ojas) depend on the six tastes (rasa).
