Ojo-Visramsa: Displaced Ojas

Ojo-visramsa is the impairment of the distribution of ojas by the heart, caused by leakage and escape through one or more of the srotamsi (channels of the body). This disorder arises from improper functioning of vyana vayu, which normally circulates ojas to all the dhatus, combined with vishama (imbalanced) dhatu agni in a particular tissue.

Ojo-visramsa moves from dhatu to dhatu, manifesting wherever dhatu agni is weak. Symptoms include loose joints and inert extremities, and the condition can progress to ojo-vyapat. Both para and apara ojas normally keep vata in the colon, pitta in the small intestine, and kapha in the chest. When kapha from the chest moves into the sinuses, or vata from the colon moves into the sciatic nerve, these are displacements of ojas.

As long as ojas remains within the srotas it is healthy, but when it leaks out it becomes toxic — a foreign body. For example, if blood oozes out of a vessel in rakta dhatu, it can create septicemia, hematoma, abscess, and fever. Ojo-visramsa of the liver impairs tissue function and may cause episodes of hepatitis or mononucleosis.

Causes of Ojo-Visramsa

The primary causes of ojo-visramsa are improper function of vyana vayu — the subtype of vata responsible for circulating ojas throughout the dhatus — and vishama (imbalanced) dhatu agni in a particular tissue. When the tissue fire is weak, ojas leaks out of its proper channel at that site. Tejas normally maintains the quality of ojas within the srotas by regulating cellular permeability and metabolism; when tejas is disturbed, this containment fails.
