Ojo-Vyapat: Qualitative Disturbance of Ojas
Ojo-vyapat (also called ojo-dushti) means ojas disturbed by one or more doshas. It is a qualitative change in ojas caused when vata, pitta, or kapha becomes aggravated and disturbs its quality. This produces three variants: vata ojo dushti, pitta ojo dushti, and kapha ojo dushti. While ojo-visramsa is localized, ojo-vyapat affects the entire immune system of the body and is therefore more serious.
In kapha ojas disorder, kapha enters ojas and slows its circulation, creating heaviness and dullness of mind. This leads to high levels of unprocessed raw ojas (ojo-vruddhi). Vata ojo-vyapat produces emaciation, difficulty gaining weight, extreme tiredness, tuberculosis, and vata-type chronic fatigue syndrome.
Pitta ojo-vyapat occurs when tejas burns ojas, leaving the person susceptible to autoimmune dysfunction. The immune system becomes effectively burned out, leading to rheumatic fever, mononucleosis (Epstein-Barr virus), multiple sclerosis, HIV, sickle cell anemia, gout, lupus, psoriasis, eczema, or dermatitis. The liver, as the seat of pitta, is usually affected. Most AIDS cases and autoimmune illnesses begin with high tejas and high pitta.
