Udaraka Tejas

Ayurveda does not see digestion as purely mechanical. It describes layers of fire at work, from the obvious heat of the stomach down to something far more subtle.

Udaraka tejas is the subtle fire of the stomach. Udara refers to the abdomen, and tejas is the subtle, refined essence of fire in the body.

It is the tejas present in the stomach's gastric fire (jathara agni), which breaks food down so that it can be used by the cells. It represents the most refined essence of digestive heat operating in the stomach.

It is a subtle fire

Udaraka tejas is not the gross heat of digestion but its most refined essence. Ayurveda calls this refined essence of fire tejas.

It lives within the gastric fire

This tejas is present in jathara agni, the central digestive fire of the stomach. The two are closely linked: udaraka tejas is the subtle side of that fire.

It prepares food for the cells

Its role is to break food down for cellular use. In other words, it is part of how a meal becomes something your body can actually take in at the deepest level.

Udaraka tejas gives you a way to think about digestion that goes beyond quantity of food or strength of appetite. It points to the quality of the fire doing the work.

Because it sits within jathara agni, anything Ayurveda says about caring for the central digestive fire is also, in a sense, about this subtle tejas.

The key idea to carry away is that food has to be broken down finely enough for the cells to use it. Udaraka tejas is the name for the refined heat that makes that possible in the stomach.
