Overview
Scarlet Cordia is one of the herbs traditionally used in Ayurveda for skin disorders. Lasora/Gonda (Cordia) is a tree whose fruits are used as a vegetable (pickled). The flowers and fruits are both medicinal. The mucilaginous fruit is used in cough and respiratory conditions. The tree is medium-sized with rough leaves. Referenced in the flower section.
How Scarlet Cordia Helps with Skin Disorders
According to Ayurvedic pharmacology, Scarlet Cordia has specific properties that make it valuable for addressing skin disorders:
- Potency (Virya): Sheeta (cold)
- Post-digestive (Vipaka): Madhura (sweet)
- Taste (Rasa): Madhura (sweet)
- Qualities (Guna): Guru (heavy), Snigdha (unctuous)
Safety & Precautions
Scarlet Cordia is eaten as a pickled vegetable, which suggests it has a place in everyday diets. Even so, our sources leave some important gaps, and one point in its chemistry deserves attention.
Chemical Constituents
Our records list its constituents as mucilage, flavonoids and pyrrolizidine alkaloids. Pyrrolizidine alkaloids are a class of plant compounds that call for caution with regular or concentrated medicinal use, so it is sensible to get professional advice before using it as a remedy.
Heavy and Cooling Nature
Its heavy (Guru), unctuous (Snigdha) and cooling (Sheeta) qualities make it a substantial, nourishing substance. In Ayurvedic terms, heavy foods ask more of digestion.
What Our Sources Do Not Cover
Classical sources in our data do not specify contraindications, drug interactions, overdose signs, or pregnancy data. Before using it medicinally, especially for more than a short time, consult a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.
