Overview

Yellow Dock (Rumex crispus) is a powerful blood and lymph cleanser from the Polygonaceae family. It has a bitter and astringent rasa, cooling virya, and pungent vipaka. It pacifies Pitta and Kapha (PK-) but aggravates Vata (V+). It works primarily on plasma and blood tissues, acting on the circulatory, urinary, and lymphatic systems.

Yellow Dock is a major herb for reducing high Pitta. As an alterative, astringent, laxative, and antipyretic, it relieves toxic heat and clears infections, thereby reducing pain and inflammation. It is a good general cleanser of rasa and rakta dhatus. It contains large amounts of iron and can help build the blood, though it is mainly effective for Pitta-type anemia where bile thins the blood. In Vata-type anemia with chill and dryness, it will only cause further weakness.

Yellow Dock is indicated for toxic blood conditions, skin eruptions, swollen glands, glandular tumors, venereal diseases, hemorrhoids, and stomach acidity. It also has value in clearing and promoting cerebral circulation. It is related to rhubarb root, which shares its properties but is a stronger purgative. Together they can be used effectively for therapeutic purgation (virechana) to cut off accumulated Pitta at the root. It should be avoided in cases of emaciation or high Vata.
