Lohasava

Iron-based fermented Ayurvedic tonic traditionally used for anemia, digestive weakness, and a broad spectrum of chronic disorders.

Lohasava — Overview

Lohasava is a fermented iron-based preparation (Asava) from the Sahasra Yoga. Its hallmark ingredient is Loha Choorna (iron ash), combined with Trikatu (three pungents), Triphala (three fruits), Yavani, Vidanga, Mustha, and Chitraka — one pala each — along with Dhataki Pushpa, honey (Kshoudra), jaggery (Guda), and water.

The drugs are placed in an earthenware vessel whose inner walls are coated with ghee, sealed, and buried underground for one month to ferment. After filtration, the Asava is used as a digestive and tonic preparation. Traditional indications include Agni Vardhaka (digestive fire promoter), anemia (Pandu), edema (Swayathu), abdominal tumors (Gulma), digestive disorders, hemorrhoids (Arshas), skin diseases (Kushta), splenomegaly (Pleeha), itching (Kandu), asthma (Swasa), cough (Kasa), fistula-in-ano (Bhagandhara), anorexia (Arochaka), malabsorption (Grahani), and heart disease (Hridroga).
