Tamasic Diet

A diet of heavy, stale, processed, and fermented foods that promotes dullness, lethargy, and unconsciousness.

Foods and Behaviors That Cultivate Tamas

A tamasic diet includes heavy, dulling, and fermented foods. Avocado, watermelon, plums, and apricots are tamasic fruits, while mushrooms, garlic, onion, and pumpkin are tamasic vegetables. Wheat and brown rice are tamasic grains, and urad dal along with large amounts of black, pinto, and pink beans are tamasic legumes.

Hard aged cheese, processed milk, and eggs are tamasic dairy. Peanuts, rancid nuts, and black sesame seeds also fall into this category. Tamasic spices include jalapeno pepper and nutmeg, while molasses, soft drinks, and extremely sweet foods are tamasic sweets. Alcohol, marijuana, and most drugs are tamasic, as are red meats like beef, pork, and lamb.

Tamasic mental states include unconsciousness, excessive sleep, and coma. Tamasic emotions are attachment, loneliness, drowsiness, depression, and destructive anger.
