Ayurvedic Understanding of Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis is understood as a demyelination disorder caused primarily by pitta, exacerbated by vata, and affecting kapha. The myelin sheath around the axons of certain nerves is a kapha structure. When pitta burns the kapha molecules of this sheath, it creates lesions. Vata then enters these spaces, producing characteristic symptoms of weakness, fatigue, exhaustion, and tremors. The patient also cannot tolerate heat because of the underlying high pitta that initiated the destruction.
This tridoshic understanding—pitta as the initiating cause, vata as the aggravating factor producing neurological symptoms, and kapha as the tissue being destroyed—illustrates how Ayurveda views complex autoimmune and degenerative conditions through the lens of dosha interaction.
