Bitter Stage of Digestion
Fifth stage of digestion in the ileum dominated by Ether and Air, where most nutrient absorption occurs through intestinal villi.
Bitter Stage in the Ileum
The bitter stage occurs in the ileum, the last and longest portion of the small intestine. Some bile, which is bitter, is still present and continues digestion. Ether and Air elements create most of the absorption of food through the villi of the ileum wall, while Air maintains peristalsis via samana vayu.
Because of the light quality of Ether and Air, the stomach and intestines become light during this stage, which can create a sensation of false hunger. However, it is not a good time to eat — one should wait until the astringent stage is complete about an hour later. The bitter stage also cools the body and can calm high pitta symptoms. Bitter taste is yielded into rasa dhatu and nourishes asthayi majja dhatu.
