Rasa Agni

The metabolic fire governing transformation of rasa dhatu; when low it causes excess rasa production, when high it causes rasa depletion.

Role of Rasa Agni in Tissue Metabolism

If rasa agni is low, there is undue production of rasa dhatu. If rasa agni is high, rasa dhatu becomes dry. Increased agni decreases the sthayi (stable) rasa dhatu, its byproducts — lactation, menstruation, and poshaka kapha — and asthayi (unstable) rakta dhatu. Decreased agni increases the sthayi rasa dhatu, its byproducts, and asthayi rakta dhatu. There is no problem in the dhatu unless there is a problem with agni.

Herbs that kindle rasa agni include shatavari, ginger, holy basil (tulsi), and lemongrass. For premenstrual or premenopausal syndrome associated with rasa dhatu, 500 mg shatavari with guduchi aids the transformation of unprocessed rasa dhatu into processed rasa.
