Prabhava

The unique, dynamic action of a substance that cannot be explained by its taste (rasa), energy (virya), or post-digestive effect (vipaka).

The Hidden Action Beyond Logic

Prabhava is the unique, specific, dynamic action of a substance that cannot be explained by its rasa, virya, or vipaka. When two substances share identical taste, potency, and post-digestive effect yet behave differently, the difference is attributed to prabhava. A classic example is ghee with milk: two teaspoons per cup is laxative, but half a teaspoon is constipating. The logic of rasa-virya-vipaka cannot account for this — only prabhava can.

Prabhava is called achintya virya, an unpredictable or unthinkable action, and it acts directly on pithara agni inside the cell. The healing effects of gemstones, crystals, and mantras are all attributed to prabhava. When two substances share rasa, virya, and vipaka but differ in their atomic structural arrangement, they are called vichitra pratyaya arabdha — bearers of a hidden, specific action rooted in the subtle awareness encoded in the substance itself.
