Mithuna
The merging of male and female energy, a concept encompassing the union of opposites at physical, neurological, and spiritual levels.
Mithuna: The Sacred Union of Male and Female Energy
Mithuna means male and female energy merging together — a more encompassing term than "sex." The concept extends beyond physical union to describe the merging of opposite polarities within the individual. The right brain represents female energy (poetry, religion, love, compassion), while the left brain represents male energy (analytical, logical, mathematical, competitive).
When the right nostril is active, the left hemisphere becomes dominant, bringing judgmental, critical, and scientific qualities. When the left nostril breathes, the right hemisphere fills one with love, compassion, and poetry. These two hemispheres merge in the limbic area, where the primordial sex center resides. Sex does not originate in the sex organs but arises through the merging of right and left hemispheres — at that moment of merging, there is a craving to meet the opposite partner.
The sex organs are connected to the root chakra where kundalini shakti resides. When kundalini is stuck in the root chakra, a person becomes consumed by sexual desire. When kundalini moves downward, ojas is depleted. But when kundalini moves upward, one can transcend sex and transform it into samadhi. Transforming sexual energy into pure love leads to enlightenment.
