Cravings
Ayurvedic understanding of healthy versus perverted cravings as signals of dosha imbalance with or without ama.
Healthy vs. Perverted Cravings
In Ayurveda, cravings are signals from cellular intelligence reflecting the state of the doshas. A healthy craving arises when a dosha is increased but ama (toxins) has not yet formed, so cellular intelligence is still clear and accurately reports what the body needs. An unhealthy or perverted craving occurs when elevated doshas slow agni, producing ama that clogs cell membranes and distorts the messages cellular intelligence sends.
For example, high pitta can cause hypoglycemia and a genuine craving for sweet taste, which pacifies pitta and normalizes blood sugar. Low kapha may also produce a legitimate need for sweet. However, when kapha is already high, a sweet craving driven by kapha plus ama is confused cellular intelligence and should not be satisfied, because more sweet will only worsen the imbalance.
Students of Ayurveda should learn to distinguish biological need from psychological desire through clinical tools such as tongue and pulse examination. Healthy cravings should be honored; perverted cravings should be set aside.
