Bodhaka Agni
The subtle digestive fire on the tongue that allows the perception of taste the moment food enters the mouth.
Bodhaka Agni and Oral Digestion
Bodhaka agni is the fire component in the mouth that brings forth the taste of substances and maintains oral temperature. It works in conjunction with saliva (bodhaka kapha), which aids swallowing, enables taste perception, and begins carbohydrate digestion through the enzyme ptyalin.
Saliva also maintains water-electrolyte balance in the mouth and kills bacteria, which is why brushing teeth and scraping the tongue in the morning helps remove dead bacteria. Bodhaka kapha secretion increases with happiness and joy, which is why children often drool.
