Ayurvedic Definition of Health

A state of balanced doshas, agni, dhatus, and malas together with a blissful mind, senses, and soul, as defined in Sushruta Samhita 15.38.

What Ayurveda Means by Health

Ayurveda defines health (svastha — literally, established in the Self) through a classical verse from the Sushruta Samhita (15.38). A healthy person is one whose doshas are balanced, whose agni is even, whose dhatus are properly formed, whose malas are properly eliminated, whose bodily processes function well, and whose mind, soul, and senses are full of bliss.

Health is therefore not merely the absence of defined disease. It is a state in which doshas, dhatus, and malas are in proper functional relationship, producing clarity, happiness, joy, peace, and love. At the cellular level this corresponds to a balance of ojas, tejas, and prana, with sattva predominating in the mind.

Good, robust agni is the pivot: it allows this state of health to manifest, and balanced agni is itself the outcome of balanced doshas, dhatus, and malas. Practically, the most important aspect is harmony among the doshas, which depends on how one handles the physical and emotional factors of daily life.
