Tears as Upadhatu of Majja

The upadhatu (superior byproduct) of majja dhatu is ashru (tears or lacrimation). Two tear glands are located just above each eye, with small apertures called nasal lacrimal ducts opening from the eyes into the nose — which is why the nose runs when crying. The primary function of tears is to lubricate the eyeball and keep the cornea clean, since the cornea cannot be exposed to dry air. Blinking cleanses the eyes. Scanty lacrimal secretions indicate inferior majja dhatu.
