Overview

White Musali, also known as Safed Musli (Asparagus adscendens, family Liliaceae), is an excellent building and revitalizing tonic closely related to Shatavari, with which it is often combined. It has a sweet taste, cool virya, and sweet vipaka, making it Pitta- and Vata-pacifying (PV−) while potentially increasing Kapha in excess (K+).

As a nutritive tonic, demulcent, diuretic, and galactagogue, White Musali acts on the reproductive and respiratory systems, as well as all tissues in general. It specifically strengthens the reproductive system and increases reproductive tissue for both males and females. Key indications include general and sexual debility, infertility, impotence, diarrhea, leucorrhea, and spermatorrhea.

White Musali is particularly valued during pregnancy for nourishing the fetus and postpartum for promoting the production and flow of breast milk. A traditional preparation involves boiling half a teaspoon of White Musali with half a teaspoon of Shatavari in a cup of milk for five minutes, taken morning and evening. It should be used with caution in ama (toxin accumulation) and congestive disorders. The root is taken as a powder (250 mg to 1 gm), milk decoction, or confection.
