Overview
Pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium) is a pungent herb with heating virya and pungent vipaka (VK- P+ in excess). It acts on the plasma, blood, marrow and nerve tissues, working through the female reproductive, circulatory, nervous, and respiratory systems.
Pennyroyal clears the channels of the nervous and female reproductive systems. Thereby it promotes menstruation and relieves spasms, dispelling obstructive Vata. It warms the uterus and relaxes the uterine muscles. Its key actions include emmenagogue, stimulant, carminative, antispasmodic, anthelmintic, and antivenomous properties.
It is indicated for amenorrhea, menstrual cramping, hysteria, nervousness, headache, colds, and fevers. Precautions: Avoid during pregnancy and in cases of uterine bleeding. Preparations: Infusion, powder (250 to 500 mg), medicated oil.
