Garcinia Cambogia: Benefits, Uses & Dosage

Last updated:

Overview

Garcinia Cambogia is an Ayurvedic herb whose rasa is pungent and bitter, with cooling virya and pungent vipaka. It pacifies Kapha and Vata but may increase Vata in excess. It acts on the fat and nerve tissues through the digestive, nervous, and muscular systems. Its key actions are sedative and antispasmodic.

Much modern research has shown this herb and its active ingredients to be one of the best remedies for weight reduction. Garcinia aids in fat metabolism, lowers the appetite, and helps reduce the mental and emotional addiction to food and sugar. While an Ayurvedic herb, it is not commonly used in traditional formulas. It is indicated for obesity, anxiety, insomnia, nerve pain, and muscle spasms.

Caution should be exercised in high Vata conditions. The root and fruit are used. Typical preparation is as powder (250 to 500 mg) or extract.
