Vranabhairava Taila

Distinctive oil formulated by Maharshi Bhela using a distillation-like burning process with Vatsanabhi, minerals, and resins, used topically or as Nasya for severe wounds, erysipelas, epilepsy, and insanity.

Vranabhairava Taila — Overview

Vranabhairava Taila is a remarkable formulation attributed to Maharshi Bhela, prepared through a distinctive distillation-like process. The Kalka combines Vatsanabhi, Hingula, Manjishta, Haritala, Manahshila, three forms of camphor, two forms of Tuttha, Gandhaka, Eswari, Sriveshta, Sarja resin, Gouri Pashana, Yashtimadhu, Sariba, Navasara, Triphala, Devadaru, Sallaki, Haridra, Daruharidra, Chinchaphalasthi, Sthouneya, Mesha vishta, Japa, Dalchani, Saka, Nimba, Kapittha, and Amra niryasa — each one tola.

These drugs are ground with Vata milk, Salmali juice, fresh coconut water, and egg fluid, applied to cloth wrapped on an iron rod, and dried. Ghee is smeared and the cloth ignited; the dripping oil is collected into a vessel containing one prastha each of sesame and coconut oils. Afterward, the remaining oil is poured over the rod and collected separately. The finished oil is used as Lepa (application) or Nasya for Sarva Vrana, Vataroga, Visarpa, Vatarakta, Unmada, and Apasmara.
