Mustakarishta

Fermented preparation of Musthaka (Cyperus) with aromatic spices used for diarrhea, dysentery and malabsorption.

Musthakarishta — Overview

Musthakarishta is prepared from Musthaka (Cyperus rotundus) as the principal drug along with sugar, boiled down to one-quarter, and then fermented with honey and a range of aromatic and digestive herbs: Jatiphala, Jatipatra, Patraka, Chitraka, Amrasthi, Khadira root, Lavanga, Jeeraka, Ativisha, Dadima, Indrayava and Viswa (Shunthi).

It is a specific for intestinal disorders — chronic diarrhea (Atisara), dysentery (Pravahika), malabsorption (Grahani), and abdominal distension from undigested food (Ama Gulma). Musthaka is cooling, astringent and carminative, making it ideal for both inflammatory and chronic digestive imbalance.
