Rajasic Diet

A diet of stimulating, sour, salty, and spicy foods that promotes activity, movement, and mental restlessness.

Foods and Behaviors That Cultivate Rajas

A rajasic diet consists of stimulating and sour foods that promote activity and movement. Sour fruits like oranges, apples, banana, guava, and tamarind are rajasic, along with potatoes, nightshades, cauliflower, broccoli, spinach, winter squash, and pickles. Grains include millet, corn, and buckwheat; legumes include brown lentils, lima beans, kidney beans, adzuki beans, and tur dal.

Sour cream, salted butter, cream, cottage cheese, and ice cream are rajasic dairy choices. Most nuts and brown sesame seeds, along with heating spices like curry, chili, cayenne, and black pepper, also contribute rajasic qualities. Processed sugar, artificial sweeteners, cooked honey, coffee, and black or green tea are rajasic beverages and sweets. Fish, shrimp, and chicken are rajasic meats.

Rajasic mental states include concentration, thinking, contemplation, and excessive travel. Rajasic emotions are fear, anxiety, envy, jealousy, and anger.
