Undescended Testicles and Sterility

The testicles normally descend into the scrotum in the ninth month of fetal development, pulled downward by apana vayu through the inguinal canal. When a male baby is born, medical professionals check to confirm that the testicles have descended. Chronic undescended testicles may be one of the causes of sterility in a man, because the abdominal temperature is too high for sperm production.

The scrotum provides a temperature approximately 0.5 degrees lower than visceral temperature, which is essential for spermatogenesis. Similarly, men who wear excessively tight underwear may experience elevated testicular temperature from the thighs, potentially leading to sterility. Optimal temperature regulation is essential for sperm production.
