Disorders of Ranjaka Pitta

Disorders of ranjaka pitta include hepatitis, anemia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and mononucleosis. When kapha disturbs ranjaka pitta, the person may develop gallstones. If kapha is long-standing and lingers in the liver, it can lead to high cholesterol, fatty degeneration of the liver, or steatorrhea (fatty diarrhea).

There is an important relationship between ranjaka pitta and alochaka pitta (the pitta of the eyes). If the sclera appears yellow, it indicates a disorder of both ranjaka pitta and alochaka pitta. The eyes and liver are connected, and toxicity in the liver may create visual disturbances. Photophobia (sensitivity to light) is a sign of liver toxicity. The same phenomenon occurs with excessive alcohol consumption: when the liver metabolizes alcohol, excess pitta is produced, affecting visual perception. On a subtle level, a ranjaka pitta disorder may even affect sadhaka pitta of the brain.
