Causes and Relief of Neuromuscular Tension
Neuromuscular tension arises when unresolved emotions such as fear, anxiety, grief, sadness, and anger—in the form of neurotransmitters—become stuck in a muscle, creating a neuromuscular block. When a muscle is rigid, the flow of awareness is blocked.
To relieve this condition, bring conscious awareness to groups of muscles. In meditation, bring awareness to the body and relax the muscles of the feet, calves, thighs, arms, belly, chest, and even facial muscles. Opening the jaw slightly and touching the tip of the tongue to the palate behind the front teeth relaxes the muscles of the jaw. This relaxation brings balance to tarpaka kapha, sadhaka pitta, and prana vayu in the neuromuscular junctions, leading to tranquility and relief of stress.
In panchakarma, application of oil to the skin penetrates into the deeper tissues and mamsa dhatu, releasing repressed emotions. Rubbing oil in the opposite direction of the lay of hair pushes the oil into hair follicles, sebaceous glands, and the superficial and deep fascia. The subtle quality of sesame oil stimulates neurotransmitters in the central nervous system, decrystallizing and dissolving those crystals of unresolved emotions.
