Bodhaka Kapha Disorders
When Bodhaka Kapha is deranged, the effects can cascade throughout the entire Kapha system — affecting Kledaka Kapha in the stomach, Avalambaka Kapha in the lungs and heart, Tarpaka Kapha in the brain, and Shleshaka Kapha in the joints. The papillae on the back of the tongue secrete a special quality of Bodhaka Kapha that maintains the flora of the pharynx. The tonsils also secrete a specialized Bodhaka Kapha — when the tonsil becomes septic, it means Bodhaka Kapha is deranged, and septic tonsillitis may create myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle) or arthritis.
Because Bodhaka Kapha is sweet, bacteria easily grow in the mouth if there is an excess of sweet taste. Without proper oral hygiene, the oral cavity becomes a breeding ground for bacteria, leading to receding gums and deep pocket infections. Triphala tea is recommended to maintain the normal attributes of Bodhaka Kapha — it can help viscous, thick Bodhaka Kapha become thin and liquid.
Diagnostic signs from saliva: Healthy saliva is thin; unhealthy saliva is thick. Thick saliva may indicate dental calculi, diabetes, worms, or Parkinson's disease. If a child drools on a pillow while sleeping, it may indicate intestinal worms, as their presence in the colon stimulates Bodhaka Kapha secretion. Excess saliva or a sticky mouth may also indicate dehydration or pre-diabetes, because the stickiness is due to sweet saliva. In a 24-hour period, a person swallows about one pint of saliva.
